    Single phase inverter system using proportional resonant current control

    This paper presents the harmonic reduction performance of proportional resonant (PR) current controller in single phase inverter system connected to nonlinear load. In the study, proportional resonant current controller and low pass filter is discussed to eliminate low order harmonics injection in single phase inverter system. The potential of nonlinear load in producing harmonics is showed and identified by developing a nonlinear load model using a full bridge rectifier circuit. The modelling and simulation is done in MATLAB Simulink while harmonic spectrum results are obtained using Fast Fourier Transfor. End result show PR current controller capability to overcome the injection of current harmonic problems thus improved the overall total harmonic distortion (THD)

    On Mutual Fund Investment Styles

    We provide an exploratory investigation of mutual funds' investment styles. Funds' styles tend to cluster around a broad market benchmark. When funds deviate from the benchmark they are more likely to favor growth stocks with good past performance. There is some consistency in styles, although funds with poor past performance are more likely to change styles. Some evidence suggests that growth funds have better style-adjusted performance than value funds. The results are not sensitive to style identification procedure, but an approach based on fund portfolio characteristics performs better in predicting future fund returns.

    Extranet has received growing popularity among business-to-business trading partners today. It has been used to reduce delivery lead-time and improve customer service. The inter-organization nature of Extranet, coupled with the omnipresence of Internet, create competitive advantages for a company over those who do not have Extranet linkage. This study investigates the factors affecting the adoption of Extranet in rubbers and plastics industry. The results reveal that “characteristics of end user” is the most importance factor affecting the adoption.     Internal control and stock price crash risk: Evidence from China

    This paper examines the role played by internal control and its five components (i.e., control environment, risk assessment, control activities, information and communication, and monitoring) in alleviating future stock price crash risk. Using a unique dataset from China, we find evidence that internal control is negatively associated with future stock price crash risk. Specifically, control environment and monitoring are significantly and negatively associated with future stock price crash risk. Moreover, the negative association between internal control and crash risk is significantly more pronounced in firms with weak internal and external governance (i.e., audited by non-Big 4 auditors, located in provinces with low market development, and less conservative in accounting) and with poor ability to mitigate impacts of extreme negative events (i.e., non-state-owned enterprises).     Development of a Passive Sampling Technique for Measuring Pesticides in Waters and Soils

    It is essential to monitor pesticides in the environment to help ensure water and soil quality. The diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique can measure quantitative in situ labile (available) concentrations of chemicals in water, soil, and sediments. This study describes the systematic development of the DGT technique for nine current pesticides, selected to be representative of different classes with a wide range of properties, with two types of resins (HLB (hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced) and XAD 18) as binding layer materials. The masses of pesticides accumulated by DGT devices were proportional to the deployment time and in inverse proportion to the thickness of the diffusive layer, in line with DGT theoretical predictions. DGT with both resin gels were tested in the laboratory for the effects of typical environmental factors on the DGT measurements. DGT performance was independent of the following: pH in the range of 4.7-8.2; dissolved organic matter concentrations <20 mg L-1 and ionic strength from 0.01 to 0.25 M, although it was slightly affected at 0.5 M in some cases. This confirms DGT as a sampler suitable for controlled studies of environmental processes affecting pesticides. Field applications of DGT to measure pesticides in situ in waters and controlled laboratory measurements on five different soils (prepared at fixed soil/water ratios) demonstrated DGT is a suitable tool for environmental monitoring in waters and for investigating chemical processes in soils

    Domestic Value Added and Employment Generated by Chinese Exports: A Quantitative Estimation

    We develop an input-output methodology to estimate how Chinese exports affect the country’s total domestic value added (DVA) and employment for 1995 and 2002. Total DVA generated by exports is obtained by subtracting all direct and indirect imported intermediate goods from the gross value of exports, and total employment is obtained by adding all direct and indirect employment generated by exports. To implement these estimations, we use hitherto unpublished Chinese government data to construct several completely new datasets, including an input-output table with separate input-output and employment-output coefficients for processing and non-processing exports.     By applying recent results in optimization transfer, a new algorithm for kernel Fisher Discriminant Analysis is provided that makes use of a non-smooth penalty on the coefficients to provide a parsimonious solution. The algorithm is simple, easily programmed and is shown to perform as well as or better than a number of leading machine learning algorithms on a substantial benchmark. It is then applied to a set of extreme small-sample-size problems in virtual screening where it is found to be less accurate than a currently leading approach but is still comparable in a number of cases

    Grey-box model identification via evolutionary computing

    This paper presents an evolutionary grey-box model identification methodology that makes the best use of a priori knowledge on a clear-box model with a global structural representation of the physical system under study, whilst incorporating accurate blackbox models for immeasurable and local nonlinearities of a practical system. The evolutionary technique is applied to building dominant structural identification with local parametric tuning without the need of a differentiable performance index in the presence of noisy data. It is shown that the evolutionary technique provides an excellent fitting performance and is capable of accommodating multiple objectives such as to examine the relationships between model complexity and fitting accuracy during the model building process. Validation results show that the proposed method offers robust, uncluttered and accurate models for two practical systems. It is expected that this type of grey-box models will accommodate many practical engineering systems for a better modelling accuracy

    Decay rate and renormalized frequency shift of a quantum wire Wannier exciton in a planar microcavity

    The superradiant decay rate and frequency shift of a Wannier exciton in a one-dimensional quantum wire are studied. It is shown that the dark mode exciton can be examined experimentally when the quantum wire is embedded in a planar microcavity. It is also found that the decay rate is greatly enhanced as the cavity length LcL_{c} is equal to the multiple wavelength of the emitted photon. Similar to its decay rate counterpart, the frequency shift also shows discontinuities at resonant modes.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures. To appear in P. R. B. September 200

    Optical Limiting in Single-walled Carbon Nanotube Suspensions

    Optical limiting behaviour of suspensions of single-walled carbon nanotubes in water, ethanol and ethylene glycol is reported. Experiments with 532 nm, 15 nsec duration laser pulses show that optical limiting occurs mainly due to nonlinear scattering. The observed host liquid dependence of optical limiting in different suspensions suggests that the scattering originates from microbubbles formed due to absorption-induced heating.Comment: 10 pages, 5 eps figures, to appear in Chem.
